Jim Sowinski's Trumpet Page

I am an amateur trumpet player. I played in high school and a bit in college before laying the horn down for a while. I picked it back up again 10 years ago. I still play on the Getzen Eterna Severinsen model I got in high school 25 years ago. I currently use a Bach 3B Megatone mouthpiece. I play in the Bloomington Community Band. I am interested in learning to improvise and play jazz in small combos and big bands.

There are a couple of really good resources on trumpet playing already on the Web. Mark Van Cleave maintains the Trumpet Player Online, one of the best done web sites you'll find. Another great resource is the Trumpet Players International Network page. Between these two they got it covered so I am not going to try to redo what they have done so well.

Usegroups and Lists: TPIN also maintains a list server for trumpet discussion. If you want about 30 email messages each day on trumpet issues send an email message to majordomo@trumpet.dana.edu containing only
subscribe trumpet-l
. There is also a news group rec.music.makers.trumpet on the usenet if you have access.

Another list deals with community bands and orchestras. You can get on this list by sending the mail message

I am a physicist so have some interest in the acoustics of trumpets. I will list some references I have found useful for studying the acoustics of the trumpet.

  • Some good starting references.
  • Results of a literature search.
  • My description of some basic trumpet acoustics.
  • Mark VanCleave's description of intonation and resonance.

    Some other interests

  • A good German beer and scenes of Hamburg all in one bottle.
