STAR Endcap EMC Mechanical and Optical Systems Procurement Readiness Review
Indiana University Cyclotron Facility, Bloomington, IN - July 27-28, 2000
There will be a STAR "Endcap EMC Mechanical and Optical Systems Procurement Readiness Review" for the Endcap EMC project on July 27-28, 2000, at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility (IUCF) in Bloomington, IN. These dates are final ... and not that far away!
The Endcap design has matured and is in the process of being finalized. The EEMC project successfully completed a RHIC/BNL Technical Design Review in February and a STAR Integration/ Interface/Installation Review in late April. An Endcap collaboration meeting was held at IUCF June 9-10. A STAR review of the mechanical and optical systems is needed before certain long lead-time items are ordered and before the set up and significant operation of construction production lines takes place.
A paragaph from the "charge to the committee" states:
An Endcap Electromagnetic Calorimeter (EEMC) has been proposed and has been approved by STAR and BNL for construction for STAR with funding from NSF, Indiana University, IUCF and DOE. The EEMC is a Pb-scintillator calorimeter with a shower max. detector. The mechanical and optical design will not be 100% complete at the time of the review. The most important question for the review committee to address relates to the possibility of a phased beginning of construction of the EEMC. Specifically, the EEEC team has requested approval to purchase materials such as lead and scintillator and begin to set up production lines immediately after the review. The committee should evaluate whether any of the remaining mechanical, optical, electronics or other design issues could result in changes that would cause a significant waste of resources (time, money, people) should the approval be given. The committee should indicate any specific actions that, in its view, should be taken by the EEMC team or STAR management before approval is granted.
At present, the Review agenda is still in preliminary form, with ongoing discussion between STAR and Endcap management and the Review Committee chair. Nonetheless, we hope to arrange things to end early enough Friday afternoon so that most people can drive back home or get up to IND airport in time for late afternoon or early evening flights. If you plan to attend, please register ASAP or send a short note by e-mail so we can begin reserving hotel rooms.
