Report of a trip by Barbara and Hans to Kathmandu and the Khumbu valley in Nepal.
(organized by Adventure Consultants, New Zeeland)
Khumbu Valley, part I: from Lukla to Kala Patar

From Kathmandu we fly to the exciting airport of Lukla, pasted onto the side of a mountain. During the first two weeks, the group is trekking up the Khumbu valley, eventually reaching the summit of Kala Patar (5643 m). Between Lukla and here we have climbed about 4800 m vertically. After a visit to the Everest base camp, we end up at Lobuche.

Khumbu Valley, part II: Kongma La and Ascent of Island Peak

From Lobuche, we cross the mountain pass Kongma La. We spend the night in tents on the pass. The next day we reach Chukung where we are getting ready for our ascent of Island Peak (6170 m). After reaching this high point of the trip, we descend to Lukla within three days and fly back to Kathmandu.

Kathmandu and Surroundings

Before and after the hike in the Khumbu, we spend a few days in Kathmandu, a bustling city that has grow around many beautiful ancient temples and other old buildings. We also visited the nearby historical sites of Patan and Bakthapur.
