Construction Timeline
LENS Construction Timeline
Construction on the LENS facility began officially in Feb. 2004. Some of the major highlights from the first year of construction are depicted here.
How LENS Works
How LENS Works
LENS produces neutrons using (p,n) reactions in Be and these are then slowed down in a water reflector and cryogenic methane moderator. Click here for more details.
Recent Results
Recent Results
Emission time distributions at LENS were first measured in March of 2006.
First Neutron Celebration
First Neutrons
Neutrons were first produced at LENS on 15 Dec. 2004.
Cold Neutrons
Cold Neutrons
Cold neutrons were first produced at LENS on 14 April 2005
Chemistry Lab
Chemistry Lab
A well-equipped 1000 sq ft. Chemistry lab is located immediately adjacent to the LENS instrument hall for easy access by users.
Klystron
Klystron
Two 1-MW RF klystrons were first used to produce neutrons at LENS in Dec. 2006. These greatly increase the amount of RF power available to the accelerator, thereby providing greater peak currents and longer neutron pulse widths.
