April 2005
Cold neutron spectrum taken at LENS with a solid methane moderator at two different temperatures compared to MCNP simulations using the "smeth22" kernel. Note that reducing the temperature to 4K (below the I-II phase transition at 20K) increases the flux at the longest wavelengths by approximately a factor of two. The overall agreement with MCNP is not as good as seen with the empty moderator, perhaps indicating that improvements are needed in the kernels for cryogenic moderators such as this.
