MINUTES OF THE COOLER-CSB GROUP MEETING

July 5, 2001 (PVP)

Present: Chris Allgower, Andy Bacher, Scott George, Paul Pancella, Mark Pickar, Tom Rinckel, John Schweitzer, Adam Smith, Ed Stephenson

The meeting came to order at 3:10 pm

Ed distributed a draft of his report on the polarimetry test run. Bottom line is that the PINTEX setup works just fine as a deuteron beam polarimeter, without too much pain. There appears to be a discrepancy in the tensor analyzing power at 231 MeV between our result and a linear interpolation between (unpublished) Riken measurements at 200 and 270 MeV. The size of the discrepancy is about 7%, which would require some unusual energy dependence, but this can be investigated further. It was suggested that the report would profit from a concluding paragraph or two which would summarize the most important results. Other comments should be transmitted to Ed before the end of the month.

PERSONNEL SCHEDULES

The collaboration was advised that Ed would be gone for most of the next two weeks, and that Tom plans a vacation from 7/13-22. Also, Pancella will be away between 7/23 and 7/26, then leaves for good on about August 17.

SHUTDOWN TASKS

The channel MWPCs have been safely stored, and the channel moved sufficiently to allow tagger operation. Tom is now in the process of restoring the tagger detectors to working order.

The 1/8 inch thick side plates (aluminum) have been successfully pressure tested. Two plates were taken to 25 psig, and cycled several times between 0 and 15 psig, with no apparent ill effects. The deflection in the center is about 0.68" (0.80") at 15 (25) psig, and is partly elastic.

Jack and Paul managed a pretty good measurement of the location of the nozzle in the horizontal plane (vertical position was not measured nor is it relevant). Early analysis seems to indicate the nozzle is measurably further downstream than previously assumed. At the same time, measurements were taken which will allow a refined location of the plate separating the 6 degree magnet pole pieces (relevant for the luminosity monitor during the test run).

The magnetic shielding measurements on the Cooler floor are close to getting started.

OTHER

Walt Fox was given the desired parameters for the redesigned exit snout.

Mark and Scott are in the process of comparing Turtle and Transport analyses of the magnetic channel. Initial results show good agreement, indicating that the additional information on distributions from Turtle may be useful. Mark is also continuing to build the full simulation based on GEANT.

Tom asked for volunteers to scrub the steel plates before they are welded into the shape of a target chamber.

The meeting adjourned at 3:45 pm.
