MINUTES OF THE COOLER-CSB MEETING

December 19, 2000 (PVP)

Present: Chris Allgower, Andy Bacher, Paul Pancella, and Ed Stephenson

Meeting came to order at 4:10 pm.

Beam requests are due January 8. We will meet on Jan. 4 to work out our request. Note that deuteron beam development is scheduled during the shutdown, so Friesel would prefer to start with a user who wants deuterons, even though it looks like all potential users would prefer protons initially. The switch from deuterons to protons can probably be accomplished in a matter of days, while the reverse is still problematic and expected to take longer.

Initial feedback from the NSF site visit was positive. Our posters looked good and the reception to Ed's talk was also good. Stephenson has begun work on a web site repository for reference documentation; it may well be released after the break. He will welcome input from collaborators.

TASKS

Looks like the scintillators will be ready for use by the end of the current shutdown. This is not obviously the case for the MWPCs. Boards are in house, but no winding will start before the 1st of the year. Someone from OUR group should soon start to work on WC3; find it, move it into the wire chamber test lab, gas it up, apply voltage and see how it responds to a source.

Mapping of the septum magnetic field is now scheduled to start after Jan. 1 with a B vs I curve. Pancella will provide the mapping grid and try to analyze the data as it appears.

Data acquisition computer will be Hera.

We must determine final quad positions as soon as possible so that the final vacuum chamber design for the channel can be finished and submitted to the shop in EARLY January. The idea of a sextupole magnet to counteract the aberrations in the quads was raised, but it seems doubtful we could find such a magnet quickly with an 8" bore.

Start thinking about what sort of luminosity monitor we might use during the upcoming channel tests.

The meeting adjourned at about 5:30 pm.
