The Indiana University Cyclotron Facility (IUCF) is a multidisciplinary laboratory performing research and development in the areas of accelerator physics, nuclear physics, materials science, life science and biomedical applications of accelerators. Because excellence in academic research is pivotal to IUCF, educational experiences are available to high school through post-doctoral students. The laboratory is staffed by approximately 130 highly trained scientific, technical, and administrative staff members and serves approximately 60 on-site graduate students, postdoctoral research fellows and physics faculty members. In addition, research and educational activities are available to young scientists and students from throughout the United States and around the world.

Undergraduate Students

Projects at IUCF are accessible to undergraduates through several programs. The largest number of opportunities is available through the Department of Physics at Indiana University. The Applied Physics Program and IUCF provide practical research experiences and internships. Each summer, faculty and staff at IUCF sponsor students enrolled in the Research Experience for Undergraduates, and several summer interns.

Graduate Students

Students interested in applying to graduate school are encouraged to direct their inquiries to the department most closely aligned with their interests. Graduate students from the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geology and Psychology as well as from the Schools of Medicine, Optometry, and Informatics have all found research opportunities plentiful at IUCF.

A list of all the Graduate Thesis work can be found here.

Postdoctoral Opportunities

For information regarding current postdoctoral positions, please refer the IUCF job listings.

Accelerator School

The US Particle Accelerator School together with the Indiana University Department of Physics offers an opportunity to earn a Master of Science Degree in Beam Physics and Technology. Interested students may go to the Physics web site and click on "apply now" under the graduate program to apply to the IU/USPAS Master's Degree program. For more information, visit the USPAS site.

Institute for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education

ISTEME partners with schools and school systems to develop 21st-century STEM skills among K-12 students. As part of this effort, IUCF has partnered with then Monroe County Community School Corporation to include excellent high school students in ongoing laboratory research. Interested students should contact their high school teachers or guidance counselors for more information.

Opportunities are also available through the College of Arts and Sciences Pre-college Institute and the Advance College Project (ACP).

IUCF Faculty participate in the Science Olympiad, a yearly competition for high school students who like to do projects and meet challenges in all areas of science and technology.

Mini University

IUCF often offers classes in conjunction with the IU Mini University. This offering is a delightful week of learning at an award-winning vacation college located at IU Bloomington. You need not be an IU graduate to attend - the Mini University is open to anyone interested in lifelong learning.

Summer Internships

IUCF employs several interns each summer through either the Applied Physics Program or through self-referral. These students may elect to participate in the seminars, lectures, presentations and activities provided through the REU program, which enhances the experience by including an academic component in addition to the technical experience. Interested students should contact IUCF for more information.

Research Experience for Undergraduates

Under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation, the IUCF offers the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU). Applications are accepted early each calendar year. Accepted students will receive travel and living expenses as well as summer salary.

Outreach Activities

IUCF offers public tours free of charge at any time during normal working hours. Contact IUCF to arrange individual or group visits to the facility. Opportunities to visit are also in association with special events such as the Department of Physics annual Open House.
